Greater New York Chapter, The Links, Inc. Community Partnership and SHARE Hosted Seniors for Energy Conservation Forum
On Friday, January 25, 2013 the Greater New York Chapter of The Links, Inc., Health & Human Services Facet and SHARE partnered with Abyssinian Development Corp. to host an educational forum on Energy Conservation for seniors in the Harlem Community. The forum was held at the Brookdale Center at Hunter College/City University of New York for over 50 seniors.
Frank Fraley, President of SHARE, presented information on how seniors can protect themselves against poor air
quality, lower their electricity bills and the benefits of clean energy options. Frank Fraley said “This forum on energy
and air quality provided seniors with valuable information they can use to make informed choices regarding their energy usage and habits that can positively impact their quality of life.”
The topic of energy has been gaining attention nationwide as an issue that has serious financial and health consequences for older adults. Gerri Warren Merrick, President of the Greater New York Chapter of The Links, Inc. stated “Rising energy costs and poor air quality can be complicated by adverse living conditions which negatively impact on senior’s fitness and health including asthma, emphysema, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD),
increased risk of heart attacks and premature death.” The Greater New York Chapter of the Links, Inc. presents many educational forums with their community partners to provide resources and tools for the community to improve the quality of life.
